London’s Jet Aircraft Museum will be unveiling the nose section of a Ukrainian MIG-29. The premier event on February 24th and open house on the 25th will be raising funds to buy generators for Ukrainian civilians.
Education Director and past President of the museum Doug Acton, explains what guests can expect to see of the retired fighter jet.
“The nose section is the cockpit area forward. Missing from the aircraft is the rest of the fuselage the tail and the wings.”
The MIG has been repainted with Ukrainian flags and colours but not just because of the fundraiser. In 1992 the Ukrainian air force demonstration team donned the same coat says Acton.
“Ukraine became independent from the Soviet Union in 91’… one of the things they wanted to do to demonstrate that independence was bring MIG’s to north America; it had never happened before. So, we’re commemorating that particular tour of those aircraft with that paint scheme and were doing it to honour Ukraine and the Ukrainian people in the current situation.”
The premier event will be held on the one-year anniversary of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. The open house is on the next day and is open to the public.
“There’s no entry fee but we hope people will donate generously and 100% of the donations will go towards the generators for Ukraine project. And then over the next month, 50% of all entry donations will go to the project.”
The Museum acquired the nose section from the Canadian Forces Base in Bagotville Quebec.
After the donation campaign ends the MIG will remain as a permanent exhibit at the Jet Aircraft Museum. More information can be found here.
