The D.B. Weldon Library at Western is fully reopened after years of construction.
The revitalization project started in 2017 and $15 million was allocated to fund the first phase of the renewal.
“It did take quite long to rebuild and did create a few complications when I wanted to study here but other than that it is really nice,” said Emma Mantakos, a student from Western. “I think it is really nice. They had a lot of new looking modern designs.”
The library has consulted students, faculty and staff members on the furniture and interior design. Vice-provost and chief librarian Catherine Steeves hopes that the new renovations will better serve the community, creating a space for independent and collaborative learning.
“I really like the first floor. I think it looks very nice now. I think it gives a really good atmosphere,” said Jayden Chan, a student who just visited the Weldon library. “I used to go to Allyn and Taylor a lot, but that’s probably because of proximity. I think there’s usually a bit more space in Weldon, and it feels better to work at since I guess the books give a better sense.”
The new design is dedicated to honour D.B. Weldon’s brutalist architectural style. Library representatives are happy to welcome the 50-year-old Weldon library into the 21st century.
