The new curbside garbage collection calendar will be launched with the green bin program in London starting from fall.
With the new rotation, recycling bins and green bins will be collected every week with garbage collected every two weeks on the same day. Many Londoners preferred collection on a consistent day of the week over the old collection calendar.
Samantha, resident of the Mansonville neighborhood, admired the convenience of the new collection arrangement but was doubtful if it would work.
“The old collection calendar is of course confusing, but I don’t think collecting garbage every two weeks is better. It would be a disaster in the summer,” said Samantha.
Ontario has been standardizing recycling programs across the province. London is one of the last cities implementing the green bin program. With organic waste disposed in green bins that are collected weekly, officials believed concerns over garbage odor is not likely to happen.
“We see this working in many other cities. I just don’t understand why we are starting the program so late,” said Karen, resident of the White Oaks neighborhood. “With recycling bins and green bins, we actually have little garbage.”
The City of London originally planned to start the program in late 2021. Due to supply chain issues, new collection trucks are to be arrived in late 2023.
