Bill 23 was passed in legislature on November 28th. The purpose of the Bill is to assist the province in working towards its goal of building 1.5 million homes in the next decade.
Although the Bill has a definitive purpose it has been met with extensive protest.
Western’s Society of Graduate Students held a Bill 23 demonstration at UC Hill on December 9th.
Prior to the event the SOGS released a press release condemning the Bill and noted they wanted to spread awareness about its implications on the housing and climate crisis.
It was a cold windy afternoon for the event, but it did not stop a large crowd from attending.
The event was attended by undergraduate students, graduate students, professors, members of the community, city councillors, and London MPP’s.
Statements were made by Western graduate students Brendan Samuels, and Ashton Forrest, London City Councillors Sam Troscow and Corrine Rahman, as well as MPP’s Peggy Sattler and Terence Kernaghan.
Once remarks were made the demonstration left UC Hill and marched through campus to Richmond St were demonstrators remained with signs.
