Last night at the Inaugural Council Meeting Mayor Josh Morgan and London’s 14 councillors were sworn in. Morgan then gave his first speech as London’s new mayor, where he focused heavily on affirming the unity within the new city council.
I truly believe that there is more that unites this council than divides it.
He continued by explaining the unanimous recognition of the issues facing the city. “Affordable housing, mental health and addiction, the state of our downtown, climate change, inclusivity, and safe neighbourhoods.”
Urging his councillors to set aside their perceived political leanings, the mayor asserted that they are, “neither conservative nor progressive councillors, they are city of London councillors.”
Morgan served on council for eight years prior to his bid for mayor. Towards the end of the speech, he took some time to review the achievements of the previous council.
Some of these achievements included declaring a climate emergency, setting a net zero emissions target for 2050, investing $90 million in affordable housing, and creating an anti racism and anti oppression division.
“These are but a few examples of what can be achieved when collaboration is prioritised over confrontation.”
The night continued with the appointment of a deputy mayor. Morgan nominated Councillor Shawn Lewis, then spoke to why he nominated him.
The mayor first noted that Lewis is ‘a member of the pride community’ before moving on to the fact that Lewis represents the ‘East end’ of the city which the mayor says has not been represented in this role in decades. Lewis’ experience in council was also highlighted, including his consistent service in committees and taking on extra duties.
“His diversity, his perspective, and his experience I think will be an asset to all of us in his role of deputy mayor, and I am proud to nominate him today.”
The motion then passed unanimously to appoint Councillor Lewis as deputy mayor.
The council will meet next on November 22nd.
