Mayor Elect Josh Morgan does not support Doug Ford’s ‘Strong Mayor’ powers.
Morgan believes the veto power would be a divisive tool and that it’s inefficient for council to try and form a two third’s majority to overrule one person.
We’re going to work collaboratively on where to take Londoners next.
Premier Doug Ford announced before the municipal election that he would be giving new powers to mayors around the province next year. This includes the controversial ability to veto decisions made by council, which could be overturned by a two-thirds majority.
When asked about how the veto could be used with his potentially politically divided council, Morgan said it wouldn’t come into play at all because he believes that council is united on the big issues that matter most to Londoners right now like homelessness, mental health, addictions, and investments into city growth.
Morgan says he’s looking forward to the work ahead including bringing the eight new councillors up to speed.
