The Humane Society of London and Middlesex is calling for people to foster pets. Right now the society is at full capacity and can’t accept any more pet surrenders. The wait list has grown to over 100 applications.
Executive Director Steve Ryall says the main cause for this is affordability. Many families aren’t able to keep up with the growing costs of pet expenses like food, but the biggest issue reported is veterinarian bills.
Our number one reason for surrender currently, is health costs. That used to be number five two years ago. There is an overpopulation of animals in our area compared to the volume of vets that we have.
Ryall says costs have gone up around 40% in the last two years, and that London suffers from an overcrowded pet to vet ratio. When asked about the rumour that people we’re returning pets now that the lockdown companionship is no longer needed, Ryall said that is not what the society has seen.
“The story of people just giving up on pets is just not true. In fact, it’s very compassionate that they are coming to us and bringing their animals and doing the right thing for their animal and their family.”
