Every year, all Canadian fire departments hold a “Fire Prevention Week” in second full week of October. Each year, they chose one particular theme to focus on. This year, they chose to bring some more attention to ‘escape plans’.
Always make sure you know two ways put of the building that you are living in!
Matt Hepditch, Deputy Fire Chief of the London Fire Department
“Fire won’t wait. Plan your escape!”
“Always make sure you have a planned fire escape. Plan two ways out of every room in your house and make sure you know the fastest escape out of your own building”, says Matt Hepditch, Deputy Fire Chief of the London Fire Department.
Matt also emphasizes that it is important to get yourself to safety first and only then call emergency services, but that you should never go back inside to get something or someone out.
Number one reason for a home-fire:
There are many things that can cause a fire, but one is hottest to occur: ‘cooking fires’. Matt Hepditch explains how to prevent it from happening:
Three tips from Matt Hepditch
- Always have a fire-alarm on every floor of your home and check regularly if they are still working.
- Close bedroom doors during the night when you are sleeping. They will keep out a lot of the smoke during an ongoing fire.
- When you are escaping from an ongoing fire: make sure to always stay low, so you stay under the smoke.
Next years ‘Fire Prevention Week’ will take place from the 8th till the 14th of October.
