A vigil happened yesterday in honour of the Afzaal family. The vigil took place at the corner of Hyde Park and South Carriage Road where the targeted vehicle crash happened a year ago. A prayer service took place before speakers went to the podium to talk about the family and unveiling the mural.
Around 6 p.m. a large crowd started to gather at the vigil to show their support in memory of the Afzaal family. Closer to 7 p.m. speakers took the stage to discuss about the march that happened on the weekend. Throughout the speeches the mural is unveiled at the corner of Hyde Park and South Carriage Road to commemorate for the Afzaal family.
A cousin of the Afzaal family Esa Islam was affiliated with the creation of the mural and says:
“It was a really nice healing process to be able to talk a lot with both Yumnah friends and family as I was her cousin, and I was able to just connect with those people and talk about how they lived and how happy they were as people”.
On June 5, a march happened for the Afzaal family down Oxford Street Road. The march started at Oakridge secondary school where thousands of people showed up to show their support. Before the march went underway to the London Muslim Mosque. A string of speakers took the stage to discuss about the importance of this day, memories of the Afzaal family and raising awareness to stop Islamophobia.
