Ontario to drop mask mandates on March 21, the province will also be relaxing most COVID restrictions over the province. Fanshawe College is not included in those settings and will continue to require masks. With that being said, Fanshawe’s students have slightly different opinions on that announcement.
With Fanshawe’s decision on keeping the mask mandates, students’ reactions differ. Some agree that it is the right decision to keep requiring masks in order to keep all students safe on campus, and some others think it is common sense to lift the mask restrictions at Fanshawe since they are all being lifted across the province.
Allawi Ba-aqail, a first year Office Administration student at Fanshawe College, does not think Fanshawe’s decision on keeping the mask mandates is quite necessary, as the mask restrictions are set to be lifted across Ontario on March 21. “We have all been waiting on the province’s decision on lifting the mask restrictions, we were excited about it honestly.” Allawi said. “I hate the fact that we are going to keep being stuck wearing masks on campus, I really do not think it is necessary anymore.” Allawi added. Allawi also added that he and his friends wish they could go study at campus but the mask restrictions make it difficult for them. “We always go study somewhere outside so we do not have to wear masks the whole time we are studying, it is really annoying.” Allawi said.
Allawi agrees that everybody must follow the campus’ rules but it indeed would have been better if they could be on campus with no masks. ” I really think COVID was a tough period for everybody and that is why it is better for the students’ mental health to lift the mask restrictions from campus as well.
On the other hand, other students are agreeing that the College should keep protecting the students while keeping the mask restrictions. Nabila Khan, a first year Police Foundation student at Fanshawe thinks it is best to keep everyone safe on campus by continuing to require facial covering.
“I think ever since the pandemic started when I was in high school until I got into college, all restrictions in school and on campus have been for our own good, otherwise we would have not made it healthy this far.” Zahraa said. Zahraa thinks it is the right decision to keep the mask mandates as there are a lot of students going to their classes and studying in the study room and it is best to keep everyone safe as the pandemic is not completely over just yet. “I will feel safer going to my classes with a mask on especially that there are still COVID cases in London and there are many students in my classes.” Zahraa added.
With many in-person activities resumed now at Fanshawe College such as the The Wellness Centre, many students will be coming in and out of campus all day long and it is best to keep everyone safe.
