Since December last year London has had two speed cameras operating in two different school zones. One on Second Street and the other on Thomson Road.
One city councillor, Paul Van Meerbergen who represents ward 10, does not approve of these cameras. He argues that the cameras simply cost too much for the service they provide. Citing their price tag of around $1 million, and the provincial regulation to warn drivers with signs ahead.
Van Meerbergen believes that speed bumps would have been preferable thanks to their cheap cost. He contests the conventional thinking on the speed cameras that they would eventually make their upfront cost back through tickets; the councillor feels that the warnings ahead of the cameras will prevent the cameras from ticketing enough speeders.
