Fanshawe President, Peter Devlin, was joined by Director of Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion, Joseph Pazzano to sign two charters alongside 50 other schools. This was part of an effort to make the school a more equitable and inclusive environment, and to mark their efforts to end systematic racism.
The charters that were signed were the Scarborough Charter on Anti-Black Racism and Inclusion in Canadian Higher Education and the Federal Dimensions Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Charter.
“First, to engage our community in this work, we commit that Fanshawe will launch an EDI and anti-oppression task force to engage with the campus and broader community and develop an action plan with measurable and achievable objectives,” says Devlin. “Second, to embed in leadership, we commit that every member of the senior leadership team at the college will receive EDI, anti-oppression, and anti-racism training, which addresses the application of EDI to decision-making, which establishes principles of inclusive leadership.”
Devlin also pledged to make equity-informed decisions and collect self-identification data to measure and track progress in improving representation. After the charters were signed, MP Arielle Kayabaga, MP Peter Fragiskatos, and Mayor Ed Holder spoke on the topic and the impact of the charters.
