Mallgoers gather to look at the artworks displayed by London Community Artists along one of Cherryhill Village Mall's hallways
The London Community Artists are always looking for ways to be able to involve members in events and activities across the city. The Cherryhill Village Mall is always looking to find new, creative ways of celebrating London. On Saturday, February 5, the two were able to join forces to officially debut the Cherryhill Village Mall Gallery, Featuring The London Community Artists.
It’s a series of five display cases along one of the mall’s hallways, filled with art pieces created by members of the London-based art guild. According to LCA president Bill Stephens, the project had been in the works for almost a year, and finally having the project completed will give the members of the art group the chance to display their works for Londoners to see.
According to Cherryhill Mall’s marketing director, Cindy Sedge, the project’s evolution over the year of planning was big. “Originally, it was a concept of a mural, but then the sad part of a mural is, after a while, everyone’s seen it. And then the idea evolved from a mural into an ever-changing gallery that we can switch out every five to six weeks to focus on different artists.”
Currently, the plan for the art gallery is for ten artists to be featured every period, taking up half of a display cabinet to show off their best work. Additionally, each piece is presented with identifying information, as well as a price and link to go to if you’re interested in purchasing the work.
The grand opening of the gallery was attended by members of the LCA, as well as curious mallgoers and city officials. Eunju Yi and Rebekah Morrison-Wize were in attendance, the Executive Director and Officer of Development and Investments with the London Arts Council. Yi praised the combined efforts of the mall and art group’s ingenuity, saying, “for artists, being able to showcase their artwork and being able to sell is an amazing opportunity, and I’m glad that this group is able to find a really creative solution to showcase their work in the public space like this.”
With the installation in place, all parties hope it will bring a greater appreciation for the arts community to London.
