The city of London hosts many long lasting sporting amenities in the city. With Labatt Park being the oldest baseball park in the world, the London Knights being one of the top teams in the OHL for 50+ years and the London Curling Club, which has been open and operating since 1847. There isn’t something for anyone in the city to enjoy. With the restrictions in the province having eased on January 31st, the London Curling Club was able to reopen their doors to London’s stone sliders.
Greg Lewis is the LCC Club Manager and he was glad to welcome his patrons back. “It’s so nice to get back and open the doors and watch our members come out. They’re all happy to be back in the club and curling again, you know, to say it’s normal? It’s not. But, it’s the closest thing we were going to get this year.” Greg hopes to keep his doors open in order to finish out this season and is already looking forward to next year. “Hopefully, next fall, things are somewhat back to a normal curling season. Where we can really play the game and enjoy it the way we really want to.”
With the club’s history and rink, the LCC has hosted the Continental Cup of Curling in two of the last four years. “Yes, we we’ve hosted the Continental Cup of curling, two of the last four years here in London. And the community’s really got behind that, and we’ve had sellout crowds, I think, pretty much every night for that event. And it was well received. That was really sort of a stepping stone to us putting in a bid to get the Brier back in London. And so, curlers in London are very excited to have the Brier coming back.” The Tim Horton’s Brier announced that it was coming back to the Forest City in 2023 early last week.
Having run the LCC since 2015 when Greg took over the job from Doug Petch when he retired, Greg hopes to bring more attention to the club. “So next year, we’re actually into our 175th year. So we plan on having a few more celebrations around that milestone for our club and we have a segment we call Brooms and Brews. We hold those two or three times every year. And we have one coming up. I believe it’s March 12 on a Saturday night, and for 15 bucks, you can sign up online and come up with your friends and play the game for an hour and sit around and have some some drinks and we hand out a few door prizes. So it’s a good, inexpensive way to enjoy curling and see if it’s something you might like.” Greg says that he hopes to see more people check out the game of curling and see what it has to offer.
