GoodLife Fitness, the largest fitness company in Canada with its headquarters in London, has expressed disappointment over the provincial government’s decision to close down gyms.
Vice President of Operations at GoodLife, Tracy Matthews told XFM news in a statement, “During times like these, it’s important for people to take care of their physical and mental health. The closure of gyms in Ontario creates a significant barrier to exercise at a time when many Ontarians feel they need it most.”
GoodLife Fitness has seven gyms in London and the organization is using digital means to support their members during the closure period but they can’t replace the in-person experience.
“There is always extra interest in fitness as we enter a new year. While we are doing everything we can to support our members via ‘GoodLife On-Demand Plus’ and Instagram Live, these digital options do not take the place of the in-person gym experience that our Members miss so much.”
The statement also said that GoodLife is, “ready and hopeful to safely reopen very soon and hope the provincial government will give that green light for the end of the month.”
However, the green light is not likely to come at the end of January. Chief medical officer Dr. Kieran Moore warned yesterday that the closures of gyms, indoor dining, etc, could remain in place beyond their scheduled expiry date as Ontario set daily records in COVID-19 hospitalizations.
