The 2021 Lou Marsh Award winner has been announced. The Lou Marsh Award is for the Canadian Athlete of the Year. The award started in 1936. It was named in honor of Lou Marsh, a Canadian athlete, referee, and former sports editor. The Trophy has been awarded 79 times and won by 62 individual athletes and three pairs. Hockey Legend Wayne Gretzky has the most trophies with a total of 4. The award winners have been athletes in many sports, from swimming to auto racing. The award is chosen by a panel of journalists, with the vote always taking place in December.
This year had many great Canadian athletic performances, but only one could win. Some of the top considered athletes were:
- Andre De Grasse – Track and Field
- Penny Oleksiak – Swimming
- Maggie Mac Neil – Swimming
- Damian Warner – Decathlete
- Steph Labbé and Jessie Fleming – Soccer
- Aurélie Rivard – Wheelchair Racing
- Alphonso Davies and Jonathan David – Soccer
- Vladimir Guerrero Jr. – Baseball
- Connor McDavid – Hockey
It was decided that the 2021 Lou Marsh Award winner is London’s own Damian Warner. London Mayor Ed Holder congratulated Warner on his fantastic year.

Warner had a tremendous year leaving his mark on the Olympics. Warner set an Olympic record with 9,018 points, becoming Canada’s first champion in the decathlon in Olympic Summer Games history. In addition, Warner is the first decathlete to win the Lou Marsh Award.
