New testing rules are set to be implemented in airports across the country.
“In the coming days, all fully vaccinated travelers arriving by air from departure points other than the United States will be subject to arrival testing. Fully vaccinated travelers will be required to quarantine while they await the results of their arrival test,” the Public health agency of Canada announced on Tuesday.
The new rules are expected to come into effect from the weekend. There are concerns about long wait times and frustration for passengers. Industry groups are saying testing all but U.S arrivals on international flights can cause “chaos” at airports.
The authorities are still to decide whether the tests will be administered on-site or through take-home kits.
The testing rules will come as a backward step for the air travel industry which seemed to be on a positive trajectory since September. Several airports in the country, including London International airport are still to be cleared to hold international flights. Return to normal operation now seems even longer for these airports.
These new requirements also add to the confusion among travelers. “At this point people are confused, there are so many who planned to go away for their holidays but there are question marks that we can’t answer,” said Hannah, owner of Hannah Tours and Travels in London.
