The City Hall planning committee voted in favour of a 17-storey apartment building to be constructed on the edge of Victoria Park. It is Auburn Development’s third pitch for the apartment building after they chopped off eight storeys from the last plan.
Concerns about high intensification and other neighbourhood objections have been raised regarding the plan.
Councillor Shawn Lewis said, ” The properties immediately behind this proposal are not the properties being used by families as housing anymore. These are buildings that have been converted… they are parking lots, backyards, they are not outdoor green space anymore, so I am not sure the immediate impact is as strong as people would say.”
He also says that there were no mentions of affordable housing in the proposal and he will raise that discussion with the developers and other City Hall staff.
It could take more than a year after the final approval before the construction starts as decisions about electricity, road safety and garbage collection regarding the project will take time.
It is estimated that the tower would drive $1.1 million in property tax revenue every year. The plan will be discussed next in the council meeting on Nov 16.
