For the week before Halloween, the London Children’s Library is providing kids and young families in London, Ont. a way to be able to play and learn all at once. The second annual Halloweek event began on Tuesday, Oct. 26 and will be running all the way up to Halloween itself, with child-friendly events such as ‘Create Your Own Monster Gourd,’ ‘Monster Mash Dance Party,’ and ‘Pumpkin Drop.’
“It’s an opportunity to get outside and for children to hypothesize and experiment with the scientific method,” says Mira Noordermeer, the marketing and communications coordinator at the museum. “What do they think is going to happen? Can you draw it, can you guess where it’s going to land, how fast is it going to fall? Those kind of questions. And then, obviously, just the fun and hilarity that comes with smashing pumpkins.”
Combining fun and education is the museum’s primary goal when it comes to the events they offer: Noordermeer stresses that the importance of interactivity and play is important for children learning about the world:
“When our doors opened a few weeks ago a child ran into the place and he just stood in the atrium and yelled ‘I’m so happy again!’ and I think we all burst into tears. It really speaks to the value of interactive and engaging community-based learning experiences for children.”
Halloweek isn’t the only learning experience that the London Children’s Museum will be putting on for the year: Noordermeer further explains that the museum’s PA day camp will be beginning again in November, allowing children to spend a full day at the museum learning and playing. She also expects for more holiday events to be scheduled for the upcoming Winter season.
