The $21M East Lions Community Centre finally has an opening date in December after two years of delays. The project faced a series of problems that has led to two years of opening date delays.
Ward 2 councillor, Shaw Lewis who has been overseeing the project in his ward said, “It has been one issue after another for the last three years,” when referencing the halts faced in the construction of the community centre.
“We had labour strikes with both the plumbers and the sheet metal workers of Ontario, the general contractor who had the job was having labour issues, other supply problems, materials had to go back, things got so bad we had top replace the general contractor.” The general contractor had to redo the work of the previous contractor because of quality issues which included the initial frame of the building.
Lawyer’s involvement because of change of the general contractor and covid restrictions led to more delays in the project. However, Shawn is now excited for the opening of the centre in December and is hoping that it opens before Christmas as “an early Christmas present for ward 2.”
The community centre will offer a variety of services like gymnasium, swimming pools, cooking programs, drawing and painting classes, day care and much more. Shawn believes people of all ages will find something in the facility that is a good fit for them.
The services will be offered through à la carte, “People will be able to pick and choose what they want to participate in.” The East Lions community Centre will also have subsidized programs so that people with financial challenges can also take part in services on offer.
