The Falcons men, boasting their top ten Canadian Collegiate Athletics Association (CCAA) ranking, took the field for their last game of the season against St. Clair College on Tuesday riding a 10 game unbeaten streak.
The team wasted no time, quickly jumping to a 1-0 lead within five minutes when fourth-year striker Michael Sneddon found the back of the net off of a glorious left-footed cross from Ryan Baker. This wasn’t just any ordinary goal.
Sneddon, a business marketing student, had 27 goals over his tenure with the Falcons which was tied for the most in the school’s history. That strike in the fifth minute, broke the tie with Cedric N’Guessan (2011-2016) and Greg Remijn (2005-2008) to become Fanshawe’s top goal scorer. He even added two more for good measure. Fanshawe’s men’s soccer head coach Rob Pereira was very happy for Sneddon and what he achieved.
“Really happy for Mike and his accomplishment, it really couldn’t happed to a better guy,” said Pereira. “He’s put the work in, he’s always there and ready to do whatever it takes to help the group and the success is a product of his attitude and his ability… we’re really lucky to have him in our program.”
Sneddon’s hat trick led the Falcons to a 5-0 rout of St. Clair clinching the top spot in the West division and extending the Falcon’s unbeaten streak to 11 games. However, this team’s goal wasn’t to go undefeated in regular season. According to Pereira, their eyes are set on making the OCAA finals.
“Our goal is to be in the final,” said Pereira. “That’s where our heads are at but we still have a long way to go before we get there.”
The Falcon’s quest for the OCAA finals will begin on Oct. 3 when they host the winner of George Brown and St. Lawrence in a quarterfinal matchup.
