After recent events in London, many students are nervous to walk alone on campus. Fanshawe has acknowledged the fear and is working to provide a safe and comforting environment on campus.
Hayley Rehkopf is a Fanshawe student and is facing the effects of the threats and cases of assault.
“I’ve made sure that I’ve had people around me if I’m walking around and I’ve stayed near my place. I’ve had my friends go out by themselves without me. And I don’t feel comfortable with it because I don’t want anyone to get hurt,” says Rehkopf.
The assault and death of a Western student happened not far from where Rehkopf lives.
“I just got to London and now everything’s breaking loose and everyone’s getting hurt. I don’t want to feel like I have to hide at a place that I live,” She says.
Fanshawe has resources available for students who don’t want to walk alone on campus.
Security guards and special constables are always patrolling the school and can be flagged down if needed.
“If somebody doesn’t feel comfortable walking, especially at night, call or text a friend, just so that they can stay on the line with them as they walk. We suggest staying on the path that’s most travelled and in the most lit areas as well,” says Special Constable Luke Edwards.
He also suggests staying off of your phone and not wearing headphones, to stay alert and aware of your surroundings.
Constable Edwards says all reports are taken very seriously while being investigated. If you feel unsafe and want to utilize some of Fanshawe’s services, security can be reached at 519-452-4400.
