The London Police Service issued an alert yesterday after a black bear was reportedly spotted around the north end of the city.
Police say the sighting was reported around 10 a.m. in the wooded area by Adelaide Street North and Windmere Road.
This is not the first time a bear has ventured into the city of London.
Back in June of 2020, a bear climbed a tree in the Byron neighbourhood which prompted a long standstill before the animal was eventually tranquilized, rehabilitated, and released back into the wild.
Ontario’s Ministry of Natural Resources said Monday’s sighting is one of many in the area since July 15.
Residents in the area are reminded to remain calm and slowly distance yourself away from the bear should they encounter one. If that doesn’t work, people are advised to make noise and wave their arms.
The ministry is urging people to call 911 or the toll-free Bear Wise Reporting line at (1-800-514-2327) if a bear is sighted or if the animal poses an immediate danger by acting in an aggressive way.
