Western University is one of the later universities to extend their Christmas break, but they officially announced it on Tuesday, Nov. 24th.
This ultimately means that students get a 3 week Christmas break instead of the usual 2. The University will close Dec. 22nd and will reopen on Jan, 4th, 2021, with students returning to classes on Jan, 11th now. However, the extension does not apply to staff of students in professional programs, whose classes will resume as scheduled on Jan. 4.
The school decided to do this because this year has not been easiest on the students after switching to online classes. After exams, essays, tests and quizzes constantly, these students needed a longer break than the original intended break. University president Alan Shepard is encouraging students to use the extra time to focus on self-care as well. It’s been a crazy year for everybody and a nice Christmas break will be super beneficial to not only the students, but the professors as well.
This does affect the final exam period in April, as it will now begin April 14th and end April 30th.
