The YMCA of Southwestern Ontario has eliminated more than 100 positions across its regional branches. Dipping revenues and lower staffing requirements are amongst the reasons for such action.
A total of 110 positions have been eliminated and represents approximately 5% of the agency’s workforce.
Most roles impacted were part-time, many of which have not been active since mid-March, when operations were temporarily closed.
“We remain focused on the communities we serve, and nimble so that we can begin to offer further programming once conditions allow,” said Vice President of Marketing and Communications Elyse Sheare.
There are many YMCA locations in Southwestern Ontario, including, London, Woodstock, and St. Thomas, but it has not been specified which area has been impacted by the cut.
Sheare also said that the COVID-19 pandemic has caused them to make some of the most difficult and challenging operational decisions in the history of the Organization, which is nearly 170 years old.
The YMCA reopened 16 of their fitness facilities in the London region back in August, following all health protocols.
“Despite these changes and challenges, our branches remain open and we will continue to serve our communities with the same passion, safety, and quality that people expect from the YMCA” added Sheare.
The organization is now focused on strengthening the association, to bring even more families and communities together when the pandemic and challenges are over.
