Just days after the so called Freedom March passed through Aylmer, hundreds of citizens of the town honored Remembrance Day by showing their respect, while still adhering to all social distancing guidelines. Individuals seen taking part were all pictured wearing masks and standing a considerable distance away from each other. These images are a massive disparity from what occurred during the anti-mask protest that took place in the town less than a week prior.
There was controversy amongst residents who were disappointed to see their town used as the theatre for this demonstration, citing most at the protesters did not call Aylmer their home. Along with this, some were angered to see a significant police presence to block the streets for the Freedom March but only a handful showing up to regulate Remembrance Day ceremonies.
Residents of Aylmer gathered at their Cenotaph next to their City Hall, taking a moment of silence to honor Canadian soldiers. On Nov. 10th, the Royal Canadian Legion stressed the best place to honor Remembrance Day this year would be from home. This was a result of usual ceremonies nation-wide having the ability to draw hundreds in close proximity. Aylmer defied this recommendation, in what appears to be the safest way. The stresses of the previous weekend’s protest were put aside, as the community honored those who have made the ultimate sacrifice.
