Wuhan China has been the center of the COVID-19 virus that has caused a pandemic outbreak around the world. The quickly spreading virus has caused countries to take drastic quarantine measures to help control the advancement of the disease.
Ontario is starting to experience the 14 day quarantine, but citizens of Wuhan have been living on lock down in their homes for over two months.
With the shut down of public transportation, schools, and jobs people are utilizing the resources they have to live out their daily lives at home. The surrounding provinces are supplying medical help to cities that are drastically impacted by the virus.
Mingrui Tang is a Business student at Fanshawe whose family is dealing with the crisis first hand. The Tang family has been on quarantine in their Wuhan home for over two months. Mingrui says he communicates with his family on a daily basis to keep updated on their health and living status.
COVID-19 hit Tang’s family quickly after taking one of his family members within the first day of the virus outbreak. Tang said he was in hospital for heart issues and the day he was getting out he came down with a fever and within 24 hours the virus had taken his life.
After this Tang said his family took extreme precautions and limited their contact with people.
He says his neighborhood is still on lock down and with restrictions on leaving their homes, his district resembles a ghost town. As a result they have come up with a system where one person from each family in the neighborhood volunteers each week to go out and get supplies for everyone.
“That person will mask up and put on all the protective gear and he will go out and do the grocery shopping for the neighborhood and bring back a full cart or truck full of supplies.”
Although they are limited in what they can do, they are coming up with creative ways to stay busy and occupied. One of the locals in his area is a musician and every afternoon he heads out onto his balcony and provides entertainment to those stuck in their homes.
“They are making the best of the situation and are coming together as a community, which is heart warming.”
Tang says he grateful that he is in Canada at this time, but everyday he worries about his family, and wonders when they will be able to leave the jail that has become their home.
COVID-19 has caused mass hysteria across the world due to the unknown surrounding the virus, Canada is doing everything it can to prevent this from happening here.
