The Fanshawe Falcons men’s and women’s basketball teams had some impressive players for them over the season and they were recognized for it. The 5th year veteran Chuot Angou (London, ON) has been named women’s OCAA player of the year for the second consecutive season. This is a major milestone. She was accompanied by her fifth year teammate Mikhaila Wright (London, ON) who was named and OCAA First Team All-Star and West Division Defensive Player of the Year. To have good players and a good team requires good coaching. Head Coach Bill Carriere was named the West Division Coach of the Year after coaching the Falcons to an impressive 17-1 regular season.
On the Men’s side of things Alfred Johnson was named to the OCAA First Team All Star. He was joined in being recognized for there play by teammate Marko Maletic. Marko was named OCAA Rookie of the Year, West Division All-Rookie Team, and Second Team All Star. Both of these players had incredible seasons and for Marko and Fanshawe they have a bright future.
Chuot Angou (Falcons Guard)
Angou led the Falcons offensively this season, averaging a team-high 18.4 points per game, good for sixth in the OCAA. The combo guard shot 40.2% from the field and led the West Division in three point percentage (36.2%). Angou also set a new OCAA record for best free throw percentage in a season, shooting an impressive 89.6% from the line. In addition to her offensive talent, Angou is also a tenacious on-ball defender, averaging 2.0 steals per game. She also added 3.1 rebounds and 2.8 assists per game. She is the OCAA’s nominee for the CCAA Player of the Year award that will be awarded on March 18 as part of the Women’s Basketball National Championship banquet in Nanaimo, British Columbia.
Mikhaila Wright (Falcons Guard)
Wright concludes her five-year Fanshawe career with two league awards that highlight her ability as an all-around player. She is the Fanshawe Women’s Basketball all-time leader in blocks with 97, rebounds with 631 and points with 1069. This season, Wright averaged 13.9 points and a team-high 8.6 rebounds per game. She was third in the West Division in three point percentage, shooting 35.2% from beyond the arc while shooting 41.1% from the field and 73.1% from the charity stripe. Wright was also a versatile defender for the Falcons, able to guard multiple positions and alter shots with her speed and length. Wright also reached the 1000 point milestone this season, the first in Fanshawe Women’s Basketball history.
Bill Carriere (Head Coach)
In his 14th season as Fanshawe Women’s Basketball’s Head Coach, Carriere was named the OCAA West Division Coach of the Year. He coached the Falcons to an impressive 17-1 league record, good for second place in the OCAA West. Carriere’s team finished the regular season ranked fourth nationally.
Alfred Johnson (Falcons Guard)
Alfred Johnson (London, ON) led the Falcons with 20.4 points per game, good for sixth place in the OCAA. He shot 51.8% from the field and 76.2% from the free throw line. Johnson was second in the league in rebounds per game with 11.1 and added 1.4 assists, 1.1 steals and 1.1 blocks per game. He set new Fanshawe Men’s Basketball records for most rebounds in a season with 189 and is the Fanshawe Men’s Basketball all-time rebounding leader with 412 career boards. The fourth-year forward had ten double-doubles this season.
Marko Maletic (Falcons Forward)
Marko Maletic (London, ON) had an impressive rookie campaign. He was top eight in the league averaging 19.9 points to go along with 4.7 rebounds, 1.8 assists and 1.2 steals per game. The shooting guard went 45.8% from the field, 37.6% from long range and 85.9% from the free throw line in his first season. Maletic also set a new Fanshawe Men’s Basketball record for most 3-pointers made in a season with 64. This is the first time in Fanshawe Men’s Basketball history that a Falcon has been named the overall OCAA Rookie of the Year.
Basketball in London is looking like it’s headed in the right direction as each of these Fanshawe players that have been recognized for awards are all natives of London, Ontario. The men’s season came to an unfortunate loss but has a bright future with players like Marko Maletic. For the Women’s team they have now won OCAA gold for the second consecutive season while giving themselves a birth in the CCAA National Championships from March 18-21 in Nanaimo, British Columbia. Fanshawe will be heading into the final tournament as the number 4 ranked team in the country.
