Lindsay Mathyssen of the NDP party is London-Fanshawe’s newest MP. Lindsay was elected for the same riding that her mother Irene Mathyssen lead for 13 years.
The win signifies the passing of the torch for the younger Mathyssen who commented on the expectations that await her. “They are large shoes, I know I have a great deal of work to due but I meant it when I said it’s about showing people respect and dignity.” Said Lindsay
While it will be her first term as MP, Lindsay’s familial ties have prepared her to continue with the tasks her mother started.
“I’m so fortunate for being able to work for members of parliament for 12 years, having seen through many more years what Irene Mathyssen and her team was able to accomplish and that’s what I intend to continue to fulfill, people here need help and we’re going to be there for them no matter what.” Said Lindsay

Irene Mathyssen announced her retirement in 2018 from the riding she held since 2006. While she was optimistic about her daughters chances, Irene commented on her previous concern for who would lead the London-Fanshawe riding.
“I worried very much about who the next MP would be, would they care about the community, would they support people, would they make sure everyone has an advocate.” Said Irene
The riding was believed to be London’s most fascinating ahead of the election, with Liberal candidate Mohamed Hammoud and Conservative candidate Michael van Holst growing interest. Despite the speculation the race was not close as Mathyssen won by a difference of more than 7000 votes.
