According to the statistics Canada, 43 percent of people in London are unemployed. the London Jobs Now was announced on Friday by the London Mayor Ed Holder on the production floor of diamond aircraft, a London based airplane manufacture were 100 full time position are available and have gone unfilled all due to lack of resumes and application. the London jobs now programs objective is to put thousand of Londoners to work by finding and engaging the cities hidden unemployed.
” A large group of those will, for heath or death or family reason , be people a jobs program should not target. but we expect to find another large group who want to work but have disengaged, perhaps because they lack job search skills or have become discouraged” said Mayor Holder. They goal is to understand their needs, then find ways to engage them in the job search and help direct them to one of the opening jobs in the city.

“London has a big disconnect: lots of unemployed in with lots of jobs “, said Mayor Holder. they created a task force to dig into the problem and find the solution . The London jobs now task force includes representatives from the London Economic Development Corporation, London Chamber of Commerce, City of London Social Services, Western university, Fanshawe college, London Region Manufacturing Council, and Knighthunter.
Into they research they learned 3 main points that
- London had a big job problem: with 78,000 Londoners in their prime work years not working today
- London has a big jobs apportunity: stats Canada reports that there are 9,000 opening in London economic region right now
- London employers are struggling to fill those jobs: without the right people to do the work they business is not going to survive and thrive.
The task force is hosting a job fair this Tuesday April 16th at the western fair Agriplex form 2Pm to 7Pm, as a first step forward with more to follow. The are going to be more than 70 employers that will be looking to fill more than 2,000 jobs. if London reached even the provincial average, that would mean 13,000 more Londoners being employed.
