It was at around this time last year that, the return of intramural hockey at Fanshawe College was uncertain. After a five-week long faculty strike for all the Ontario Colleges, the number of players went down dramatically. No one really knew how it would be the following year since some players either dropped out or came back and no longer had interest in the game.
Last season seemed promising, most teams had full rosters, and there was a decent number of officials to officiate the game. Since it is intramural hockey, and it is associated with Fanshawe, the staff is made up of students as well.
“It started off well last year, then the strike happened, and no one was showing up. This year its different most teams are full, the competition is a bit better, and most games have officiating.” -Said Jason Mcarthur. He went on to add that it is a lot more fun and he was glad to see how well it rebounded from last year’s strike.
“There are some nights where there will be a lower turnout, but that’s expected. Not everyone is going to be able to make every single game, but when everyone comes out it’s a blast.” -Alex Stone
Intramural hockey at Fanshawe has been around for quite some time and after a good bounce back from last year’s faculty strike, it doesn’t seem like it will be going anywhere anytime soon.
