Social media feeds are flooded with #BellLetsTalk. The day is for raising money using social media for mental health services and bringing awareness to mental health as a whole. For every text message, tweet using #BellLetsTalk, use of the Bell Let’s Talk Facebook frame or Snapchat filter, Bell will donate 5¢ to Canadian mental health initiatives. This year they expect to reach raising over 100 million dollars.
Like many campuses across the country, Fanshawe College had open discussions in Forwell hall opening up about mental health. Elizabeth Price, an MSW student, was one of many students in attendance.
“It’s taken me many years to perfect my balance of wellness and setting boundaries and taking care of myself. So, I can provide for others. So this is a cause that is really dear to my heart” She said.
Praise adds that she thinks the day is an important one to have.
“I think it’s important because a lot of times people feel alone” she said.
“Especially if they are experiencing any mental health issues or distress. It’s very isolating. So this is an opportunity for people to realize that they are not the only ones who might be having some dark thoughts. It’s a way to connect” Price added.
Student volunteers were on site along with counsellors to talk to students who felt the need to open up or just to have someone to talk to.
Those who are struggling with mental health are encouraged to talk to professional or you can find more information here.
