It was a night filled with jazz music at the Wolf Performance Hall as the Michael Wood Quartet took to the stage. Over one hundred Londoners rushed in for a seat to see the jazz show.
The show, organized by the Central Library and by a program called Jazz for the People team up to bring free monthly events, such as this one, for anyone in the community to enjoy.
Michael Robertson, the information and services librarian at the Central Library, says that he loves being able to be a part of events like this one because he gets to see so many people enjoy a night of music, and that it’s so unique for our community.
“We are featuring London based, and regional musicians. There’s a wide variety of instrumental and vocal combinations. There’s a great variety of standard jazz as well as kind of off the chart material. I think it’s a great draw for generational attendance, and jazz has a little bit of something for everybody.”
Robertson emphasized that jazz may not appeal as strongly to the younger generation as it does to the older generation, but he says that he has noticed that the more that these monthly shows occur, he sees a stronger outcome with younger individuals coming out to listen.
He adds that newcomers are always encouraged to come to the Wolf Performance Hall to see shows that Jazz for the People put on, especially since they’re free. He explains what he would tell new people who are unsure if they want to attend.
“It’s a new experience. If you’re curious to find out what it is, what the program offers, who offers it, and when, that’s one element of it. But if you’re looking for a good live music, a free live music experience, I don’t think you can do much better than coming down for the library’s program.”
The Michael Wood Quartet was tonight’s performance, but Robertson added that they do their best to mix up the artists, and the acts as much as possible to make it more enjoyable every month. Also, so that Londoners can get the experience of hearing the music in different forms and quartets.
The event is usually held on the fourth Wednesday of every month, but all the performance dates with the music act can be found on the Central Library’s website.
