The Fanshawe Women’s Volleyball team is sitting on top of the West OCAA standings heading into the Christmas holidays. Not only are they first in their division but they are ranked #1 in the province and #6 in the country. This is the highest the women’s volleyball team has been ranked in 10 years.
A huge moment in first semester was when the Falcons beat the Humber Hawks. Humber has won the last 11 provincial championships and the only team that Fanshawe hasn’t beat in seven seasons. Fanshawe middle blocker Ainsley Acton says that beating Humber was a like a moment of shock as they couldn’t believe they had just won.
Some other highlights of first semester included a victory over Niagara College who ended the Falcons’s 2017/18 season, and defeating their rival the St. Clair Saints last month in Windsor.
As semester two approaches and the Falcons look to remain undefeated Acton knows that they are playing with a target on their back and that there will be a lot of challenges to over come.
“We just need to continue to play our game, and know that everyone is wanting to end our win streak so we always have to be giving 100% not only in games but at practice as well,” says Acton.
A lot of Fanshawe’s on court success has come from how well they get along off the court adds Acton.
“We love to hangout, we do team bonding a lot, and we like being in each others life out side of volleyball. It took us a bit to get to know each other and find chemistry on the court, but now we have it all and we are flying high.”
The Falcons will be back in Burridge gym January 20th, against the Sheridan Bruins as they look to keep their undefeated season alive in semester two.
