Once laws in Ontario are set for a certain age, a push to lower the legal age is much harder than what it would be to higher it. It may seem odd to be able to go to a different province and suddenly legally be able to drink, or no longer able to drink. The chances are, this will never change.
Having a legal age of 19 helps keep alcohol consumption to a minimum in high schools. The problem is, most first years in college are 18; being away from parental supervision allows for underage binge drinking and the increase of street parties.
Jeff Cook, a special constable at Fanshawe College expresses that “students come here to grow up and become an adult, alcohol happens to be part and part with that”. Underage drinking will happen regardless. Experts have agreed that there is no real way to find out what age is best for people to legally start drinking.
The legal drinking age has been a controversial topic for years now with many differing opinions.
