The Fanshawe Falcon’s Men’s Baseball team did not start off the way they thought it would. They Kicked off the season Taking on rivals Humber Hawks on Saturday. They lost both games, game one ended with a final score of 8-3. Game two was ugly as the Falcon’s were blanked and mercy’d by a final score of 13-0. They were back at it on Sunday and showed up ready to play putting Saturday’s games behind them. They went the distance in game 1 of 2 against the Durham Lords. It was a close game right from first pitch. The Falcon’s had the lead for most of the game but the Lord’s fought back and tied it and forced the game to go to extra innings but, they would only need one. With runners automatically on first and second Falcon’s Relief pitcher Stephen Barcley had to be clutch and he was! Barcley struck out the side, shifting the pressure on the Durham defense to keep the game going. With the Same Scenario for the Lord’s going into the bottom half with runners on first and second, it was a different outcome for the Lord’s thanks to a stolen base there were now runners on the corners with one out and then Falcon’s Matt Bowden came up to the plate. Bowden put down a bunt that caught the Lord’s defense by surprise, Bowden and the Falcon’s walked off the Lord’s to win their first game of the season thanks to a surprising walk off bunt. The Momentum did not carry over into game 2 as the Falcon’s lost 7-0 capping off their opening weekend with a 1-3 record.
Head Coach Brian Harvey was interviewed prior to the weekend and he stated “there is a lot to look forward to, we have a good mix of veterans and rookies this season we know that it won’t be easy as teams get better every year but hopefully we can find our game”. He later added that the goal will remain the same, to go to the OCAA Championship and he even tossed in the National championship. He is not wrong there is plenty of potential for this years squad but considering this weekends numbers, there is still work to be done.
