The Masters is an exciting time for golfers. It is one of, if not the biggest golf tournaments of the year but it also means the start of golf season in North America.
With snow on the ground on April 6th, most London golfers will have to wait to get in there first round of the year.
Rob Vincent the PGA of Canada Head Golf Pro at Fanshawe Golf Club says that they usually aim to open April 1st.
“I think this year is a little different because we had that tease of warm weather in February and then a few nice days in March but to have snow on the ground today, it hurts us.” Says Rob.
Most golf courses in London aim to be open April 1st, which is right around The Masters which brings a lot of excitement to the sport.
“You always want to be open right around The Masters, because once people see The Masters they want to get out and play. Thats the power of that tournament.”
But with snow on the ground and a few more cold days left in the comings days it looks like most courses won’t open until later next week.
There are open courses in London for those eager to play their first round and are brave enough to take on the cold weather. Thames Valley Golf Course is open for those itching to play.
Rob adds that he hopes Fanshawe Golf Club can be open just after The Masters concludes.
“Hopefully once The Masters has concluded we will be open in the following days, maybe people who don’t want to play in the cold but they see The Masters and that motivates them to start playing.”
Although many courses are hurt by the late opening, they tend to have a longer season with the current climate. It’s time to looks forward to another season of golf in Canada.
