When we last left local DJ/Producer, WATSON, he was riding the waves of his new hit song, “Nothing Left”. Which at the time, was gaining quite a bit of traction. The collaboration with fellow producer, VanRip, was boasting around 600,00 streams on YouTube and Spotify after just one week of being released. The song also landed on Canada’s Viral 50 playlist ion Spotify and popular DJ group, The Chainsmokers, re-posted the song on their Soundcloud account. WATSON was humble and happy that people were enjoying his music, but had hopes his success would continue to grow, and that it did.
The song has been picked up by several different music channels on YouTube, the oldest one (below), has over 400,000 views.
Since December, WATSON agreed to a licensing deal with Universal Music, to which the song will be re-released. The deal includes a budget for a music video and promotion and marketing for the song. According to WATSON, the original idea was to film the music video in Los Angeles, California, but WATSON and his team decided it would be better for the budget to film in Ottawa, Ontario. “It’s nice as a Canadian artist to film our music video in the capital city of Canada,” says WATSON.
In the booth he goes by “WATSON”, but he is more commonly known by his given name, Matt Watson, a 21-year-old Western student from Toronto, Ontario. Watson is finishing his fourth year in Western’s Media Theory and Production Program with a specialization in Television Production. After he graduates, Watson says he plans on “doing music full-time for a while, and see if it goes anywhere.”
WATSON gave us a tour of his home studio, so we put him on the spot and convinced him to show us the beginning stages of his music-making process… from scratch.
WATSON tells us he has a lyric video on the way for one of his other tracks, hopefully premiering at the end of February. In the meantime, he says he will be busy trying to top “Nothing Left”.
