Student clubs are a cornerstone to life on campus. Students with similar goals, interests and ambitions can come together and benefit. Fanshawe College offers a variety of clubs ranging from the Accounting Association to the Chinese Society. Students can easily join and the benefits are endless.
Many join so they have something to do. Something like Roleplaying and Games can give students the opportunity to relieve some stress and do something they love to do. Others join to gain friends. The Chinese Society is something to make international students feel more at home and meet people who come from the same background.
The Fanshawe Accounting Association was created by students with students in mind. The goal of the club was to bring people together to learn more than what you would learn in class. Justin Verburg is the president of the Accounting Association and he says the objective is to “provide events and networking for students in all programs through a varietyof events.”
The Accounting Association and many other clubs at Fanshawe are beneficial for students who are looking for a job once they graduate.
In a competitive market when spring time comes and everyone is looking to find a job it is hard to stand out. Joining a club can help you stick out from the crowd. They hold networking events where employers will come and get a chance to meet club members. They also do practical work, Verburg mentioned they offer to do students taxes. This gives them practice for a real work experience.
At the end of last year the club had a very successful end to the semester. They held two income tax clinics where they could help and teach students how to file their taxes. 41 students had their taxes filed by members. Clubs are easy to join and easy to create. You could make one on about anything you’d like. And something as simple as the Accounting Association could help you land that job once you graduate.
