2016 has been the year of the Lion. At least for high school varsity football.
The South Lions went undefeated going all the way to the OFSAA Finals were they walked through Hamilton for a 65 to nothing win.
South cruised through the regular season with their steady defense only allowing 12 points to Saunders that head coach Mike Stenning said “our boys know that we can’t allow that in a championship game, so we are just going to earn from it and move it into our past.”
The First Championship game was for the TVDSB, where they stomped on the Laurier Rams 45-0. They were lead by by starting quarterback Ethan Martin and running back Nick Morello, who ran in 2 touchdowns.
With that win the Lions moved to the WOSSA Final against the CCH Crusaders.
This game was one for the ages. CCH started strongly into the game jumping up to a 14 point lead but after a different play calling tactic, Ethan Martin brought the team within half with a hand off to run in the TD.
After an amazing one handed catch by a receiver, South clawed their way back to take the lead of the game in the last 5 mins of the game and would hold on to it to beat the notorious CCH 21-17.
After the game, quarterback Ethan Martin had this to say “we are a really good team, this has been the goal since the beginning, CCH is a good team every year so it defiantly seems sweeter beating them.”
The next opponent for the Lions were the Mackinnon Park Blue Devils in the OFSAA Finals in Hamilton. They would go own to put the crown on to cap off this tremendous season with a 65-0 win.
